Each row is a Link Document Type and a Link Name — and Link Name is itself a Dynamic Link pointing at the first.

A field whose target DocType is not fixed: its Options name another field that holds the DocType. On a Payment Entry, Party is a Dynamic Link whose Options are party_type.
A Link always points at the same DocType, set in its Options. A Dynamic Link points at whichever DocType its partner field holds at the time.
Addresses and contacts have a Links table. Each row has a Link Document Type and a Link Name, so one address can carry a Customer row and a Supplier row.
On a Payment Entry the Party is cleared, along with the accounts and references, because the old party belongs to another DocType.
