Try an invoice dated 31 March but saved on 2 April, then switch on the Global Defaults setting.
The next Sales Invoice will be
ACC-SINV-2026-00311
From the series, with five counter digits added because it has no #.
Counter kept for the prefix ACC-SINV-2026-
From the series, in order
Cancel and amend ACC-SINV-2026-00311 and the copy is ACC-SINV-2026-00311-1; amend that and it is ACC-SINV-2026-00311-2.
Series and counters
Document Naming Settings: the series each DocType offers, and Update Series Counter to set the current value.
Naming rules
Document Naming Rule: a prefix, digits and conditions, so returns or one company can count separately.
Which date
Global Defaults › Use Posting Datetime for Naming Documents, if a back-dated invoice should carry its own year.
If the series has no # in it, ERPNext adds .##### when it names the document, so ACC-SINV-.YYYY.- counts as ACC-SINV-2026-00001, 00002 and so on.
In Document Naming Settings, pick the series and use Update Series Counter to set its current value.
A Document Naming Rule. ERPNext checks the rules for the DocType from the highest priority down, and only uses the series if none of them applies.
Year and month in a series are the day the document is saved, unless “Use Posting Datetime for Naming Documents” is on in Global Defaults. FY always follows the posting date.
The new copy keeps the number with -1 added; amend that and it becomes -2.
We set up series per company and document, fiscal-year resets and separate numbering for returns and branches. Talk to a consultant.
