Docker Desktop and Frappe’s demo

Docker Desktop runs Linux containers on Windows. Frappe’s one-file demo then starts ERPNext in a few minutes.

Install Docker Desktop and Git for Windows.

Clone Frappe’s Docker repository and start the demo.

git clone https://github.com/frappe/frappe_docker
cd frappe_docker
docker compose -f pwd.yml up -d

Open http://localhost:8080 and sign in as Administrator with the password admin.

The demo is throwaway. Docker Desktop is free for personal use and small businesses only — check Docker’s terms for your company.

Why there is no .exe

It is built for Linux

Frappe runs on Python with MariaDB, Redis, Nginx and background workers, and is only supported on Linux and macOS.

It is used in a browser

Your team can stay on Windows. Only the server runs Linux — they open ERPNext in Chrome or Edge like any website.

WSL is real Linux

Windows Subsystem for Linux runs a genuine Ubuntu inside Windows, which is why Frappe’s own guide points Windows users to it.

Frequently asked questions

Not natively. Frappe supports macOS and Debian or Ubuntu, and its installation guide points Windows users to Ubuntu in WSL. Docker Desktop and a Linux virtual machine also work.

Yes. ERPNext runs on a server and is used in a browser, so everyone can stay on Windows — only the server runs Linux.

Windows 10 version 2004 (build 19041) or later, or Windows 11. One command in an administrator PowerShell, wsl --install, sets it up with Ubuntu.

We advise against it. A desktop that sleeps, updates and restarts is the wrong home for the system everyone relies on. Use a Linux server, a Linux VM on your Windows server, or Frappe Cloud.

For personal use and small businesses, yes. Larger companies need a paid Docker subscription — check Docker’s terms before using it at work.
