On a Tuesday in the week before Deepavali, a textile and jewellery showroom near the Gandhipuram bus terminus has every counter open. A customer asks for a necklace design she saw on the shop's page; the salesperson checks the stock screen, finds the piece in the Pollachi branch, and raises a transfer so it arrives on the evening bus. At the next counter, an exchange of old gold, a scheme maturity and a fresh purchase go into one bill, weight and rate on each line, with the making charge shown separately. Extra billing terminals set up on ordinary laptops handle the queue on the textile floor, and the barcode on each saree carries its size and design. At closing, the owner sees sales, cash and card totals for every branch on his phone before the shutters are down.
