At half past eight the shutters come down on a two-floor gold showroom in Malappuram town. A year ago the staff would now settle in for an hour with the trays and the register. Tonight the floor supervisor walks each counter with a Zebra handheld, and every tray answers in a second: the tags on the ornaments report against the morning's opening stock less the day's bills. One bangle is listed at counter three but read at counter five; someone moved it to show a customer. A necklace issued to the goldsmith for resizing shows correctly as out on repair, with the time it left the vault. Staff are home by nine, and the owner's phone shows the count signed off.

Counting ornaments piece by piece takes a team and still leaves room for error or worse. With an RFID tag on each item, a handheld reader sweeps a tray in seconds and lists anything missing or misplaced against the day's opening stock and sales.
Pieces move between counters, the strong room, other branches and goldsmiths for repair, and each movement is a risk. Fixed readers at the vault door, or handheld reads at issue and return, create a movement trail by item, person and time.
