Locally built apps often mirror the database: every field on one page, English labels, tiny buttons. Customers give up and call instead. We redesign around the task, such as pay a fee, book a slot or track a booking, with the fewest steps and clear feedback.
Translated labels that overflow buttons, fonts that render badly and forms that accept only English are common. Designing for Malayalam and English together from the start, including text length, typography and input, makes an app usable for the many who read Malayalam most comfortably.
Billing and ERP screens used all day by cashiers and nurses are rarely designed at all. Keyboard-first entry, sensible defaults, larger touch targets for tablets and fewer clicks per bill reduce errors and training time at every branch.
An example
A fish-trading firm at Ponnani is replacing the notebook its buyers use at the harbour with an app, and on Tuesday two of our designers sit in its office with five of those buyers. Each is handed a phone with the prototype and asked to record a morning's purchase from a boat: species, weight, rate, advance paid. The first man stalls at a dropdown in English; by the third test the species list is a grid of Malayalam names with pictures, and the weight field opens the number pad by itself. An older buyer cannot read the grey labels in the sun, so the contrast is raised before lunch. By evening the flow takes four taps.
