Stock in Wayanad is alive in a way that cartons in a city warehouse are not. A lot of green pepper becomes a smaller lot of black pepper. Coffee cherry becomes parchment, then clean bean. Ginger and turmeric arrive wet. A pepper trader in Pulpally receives green pepper from smallholders all morning. Each grower's lot is weighed and entered with its moisture note, and the bags go to the drying yard under that lot number. A lot that came in last week is now dry; the yard supervisor records the output weight, and the system shows the loss against the normal range for the season. It is within range, so nothing is questioned. In the afternoon a Mysuru buyer's order is picked from two specific lots, and the dispatch carries their grower origin and grade. The owner checks the position on his phone: stock by grade across the main godown and the rented store near Sulthan Bathery, plus what is held on behalf of a neighbouring grower, kept separate from his own value.
