Payroll in Idukki starts at a muster shed at dawn: daily-rated workers, kilos plucked, seasonal hands and resort shifts, none of which fit an office salary package.

The largest employers in Idukki are its plantations, and their payroll is unlike any other. A tea estate near Munnar pays permanent workers a daily wage plus an incentive for leaf plucked above a base, with benefits set by plantation labour law and wage settlements. A cardamom estate takes on extra hands for the harvest rounds, many crossing from Tamil Nadu through Kumily each morning. Resorts run rotating shifts and hire for the busy weeks.
HR and payroll software on ERPNext can be configured for this. It holds employee records, attendance, shifts, leave, salary structures with daily and piece-rate components, PF, ESI, professional tax and TDS, loans and advances, and payslips and bank files. Attendance can come from a biometric device, a mobile check-in or a supervisor's muster entry.

Clerks total days worked and kilos plucked for every worker from paper check-rolls each wage period. It is slow, and arithmetic slips cause disputes. Muster and weighment entered daily let the system compute wages and incentive, and print a slip the worker can check.
Casual and harvest-time workers are often paid in cash against a name in a notebook. That leaves no proper record for statutory purposes or for the owner. Registering each worker once, even with minimal details, and recording attendance gives a defensible trail.
Festival advances, rations, medical costs and loans are recovered from wages over months. When tracked in a ledger book, balances are argued over. Each advance set up with a recovery schedule is deducted automatically and shown on every payslip.

An example
At half past six on a Friday the muster shed of a tea division outside Munnar fills with workers, and the supervisor marks attendance on a tablet as each name is called. Through the day the weighment clerk enters each picker's kilos at the collection point. On wage day the estate office runs payroll from those entries: the daily wage, the incentive for leaf above the base, the ration and festival advance recoveries, PF and ESI, all computed without a calculator. Each worker receives a slip in Tamil on WhatsApp or on paper at the shed, checks the kilos against her own count, and the bank file goes out the same afternoon. Disputes at the pay window are about kilos now, not arithmetic.
Payroll rules are gathered from your wage registers, settlements and the clerk who runs them today, and we run the new system in parallel with the old for at least one wage period before switching. That comparison is done together with your staff. Our HR consultants come from Kochi for setup and training at the estate or property, and handle later changes in rates and rules remotely.

Tea and cardamom plantations
Division-wise muster, plucking-linked incentive, daily-rated and staff payrolls in one system, PF and other statutory returns, leave-with-wages and bonus calculations, and wage slips in a language the worker reads.
Resorts and homestays
Shift rosters for front office, housekeeping and kitchen, overtime in the busy weeks, service-charge distribution, seasonal contracts with start and end dates, and staff accommodation and meal deductions.
Hydroelectric power
For contractors supplying labour and services to power stations and dam works: site-wise attendance, contract labour registers, PF and ESI documents the principal employer asks for, and wage sheets per work order.
Yes. Salary components can be formula-based, so an incentive for kilos above a base, at one or more slab rates, is computed from the daily weighment entries. When a wage settlement changes the base or the rate, the formula is updated once and applies from the date you set.
Payslip formats can be designed with Tamil or Malayalam labels alongside English, and sent on WhatsApp or printed. Supervisor entry screens can also be simplified and labelled locally. Clear slips in the worker's own language reduce pay-day disputes considerably.
At the factory, office and resort, yes. In the field it is often not, because workers report to scattered muster points. There a supervisor's mobile entry, with location and time recorded, is more workable. Both methods can feed the same payroll.
After a first conversation about your headcount, locations, attendance sources and salary rules, we agree the scope and send you a written quotation. The price, the deliverables and the timeline are fixed against that scope before any work starts, so nothing grows without your sign-off.
You speak to someone who does this work, not a call centre. They ask about how many people you pay, how attendance is captured and how payroll is run today. If it looks like a fit, we agree the scope and put it in writing, with the timeline, before any work starts. If it does not, we tell you.
