There are no large industrial estates in Idukki, and heavy manufacturing is not what the district does. Its factories are of another kind: tea factories on the estates around Munnar, Peermade and Vandiperiyar that process green leaf within hours of plucking; cardamom curing houses; spice cleaning, grinding and extraction units; and smaller makers of jaggery, chocolate, coffee and packaged foods, several of them in and around Thodupuzha.
What these share is variable input. The same kilo of leaf or spice yields differently depending on moisture, season and handling.
