It is Tuesday, and a fabrication firm on the Andoor development plot is halfway through its yearly verification. Two storekeepers walk the bays with a phone, scanning the label on each welding set, compressor and drill press. What scans is marked seen; what does not is listed for the supervisor to explain. By afternoon, three machines written off years ago are found still working in the second shed, and a lathe the books still carry is nowhere. The accountant sees the same list from the office and prepares the write-off note. The maintenance calendar, meanwhile, throws up a compressor whose service is overdue, and it is booked for Saturday.
