Manufacturing in Kottayam grew out of what the land produces. Around the Nattakom industrial area, and on smaller estates near Changanassery and Pala, units make rubber mats, bands, tread rubber, gloves and moulded goods. Presses turn out books and packaging. Rubber wood and spices are processed for sale. These are mostly small and mid-sized factories where the owner is also the production planner, and costing is done on experience.
