Our consultant spends a Tuesday at an auto-component supplier near the HMT estate, following one customer order from the sales desk to the dispatch gate. The order is typed into a register, then into an Excel schedule, then into Tally. Raw material is issued on a slip the stores keeper signs; the slip goes into a drawer. Inspection results are written in a notebook by the machine, and traceability comes from memory when an audit visits. By evening the map shows fourteen handoffs and four places where the same part number is written by hand.
