It is the fifth of the month and the queue at the school office is short. Most parents have already paid from a phone, and their receipts posted themselves to the accounts overnight. The clerk opens the dues list by division. Eleven names show, four of them on approved concessions, and a reminder goes out to the rest in Malayalam. A father comes in asking why his second instalment looks higher; the clerk turns the screen and shows the bus charge added when the route changed in June. The headmistress, in the next room, is looking at the same figures for the whole school.
