It is Tuesday, and a small engineering unit in one of the Shoranur estates is counting what it owns. The accounts clerk walks the shed with a handheld, reading the tag on each lathe, the welding sets, the compressor and the overhead crane. Every read lands against that shed as its location. Two dies do not answer. The system shows both were issued to a job worker in Ottapalam in March and never booked back, and the owner rings him before lunch. By evening the register matches the floor, the schedule the auditor wants is ready, and the quarter's depreciation has already posted itself.
Walk a shed in the Olavakkode or Karakkad estates and the worth of the business is in plain sight: lathes, presses, a compressor, a forklift, racks of dies and gauges. The record of all that is usually one spreadsheet, opened when the auditor asks. It carries machines sold years ago and misses the ones bought last season.

Once a year somebody reconciles a list nobody has touched since. Scanning each tag where it stands rebuilds the register from the floor upwards, and a transfer between two sheds is recorded on the day it happens rather than guessed at in March.
Small, valuable, movable items leave for calibration, job work or a sister unit and nobody notes it. Custody against a named person, with a return date and a calibration date, makes the absence visible while the item can still be recovered.
A compressor or a dryer gets attention when it complains. Preventive tasks set by calendar or running hours, with checklists and the spares linked to the machine, let an engineer plan the work in a quiet week instead of losing a shift in a busy one.
