It is a Tuesday in procurement season at a mill on the Chittur road out of Palakkad town. The first lorry from Kollengode is on the weighbridge before the clerks arrive. The gate keeper records gross weight, variety and moisture on a tablet, and a purchase receipt with a lot number exists at once. Mid-morning, the miller picks the next lot to run from a screen that shows age and moisture by stack. The work order draws paddy from that stack and books rice, bran and husk as they leave the line. After lunch a dealer's lorry loads branded packs for Coimbatore, and the e-way bill prints with the invoice. At closing the owner reads the day's out-turn and cash position on his phone.
Palakkad is one of the few districts in Kerala where things are made at scale. Paddy comes in from Chittur, Alathur and Kollengode and leaves as bagged rice from the mills clustered around Palakkad town. Along NH 544 at Kanjikode, engineering, steel, food and auto-component units work in shifts inside the NIDA belt. Their owners know the process perfectly and the numbers a fortnight late.

A mill buys paddy by the lorry load and sells rice, bran and husk through the year. With purchase in a register and sales in Tally, nobody can say what a lot yielded. ERPNext tracks each lot from weighbridge to bagging, so out-turn and cost per bag are known.
In a Kanjikode unit, the stores ledger says one thing and the shop floor says another. Material is issued on a chit and entered later, if at all. With work orders drawing stock against a bill of materials, consumption is recorded when it happens and variances show up the same week.
Much of what Palakkad makes leaves through Walayar. Each consignment needs an invoice, an e-way bill and often an e-invoice; prepared by hand, they hold lorries at the gate. ERPNext generates them from the delivery note.
