Palakkad is one of the few districts in Kerala where things are made at scale. Paddy comes in from Chittur, Alathur and Nemmara and leaves as bagged rice. In Kanjikode, engineering, steel, FMCG and auto-component units work in shifts beside the highway to Coimbatore. A mill buys paddy by the lorry load in season and sells rice, broken rice, bran and husk through the year. With purchase in a register and sales in Tally, nobody can say what a lot yielded. ERPNext tracks each lot from weighbridge to bagging, so out-turn and cost per bag are known.
In a Kanjikode unit, the stores ledger says one thing and the shop floor says another. Material is issued on a chit and entered later, if at all. With work orders drawing stock against a bill of materials, consumption is recorded when it happens and variances show up the same week.
