In a shed at the Kinalur growth centre a footwear unit is taking its first proper count. Sole sheets, uppers, adhesives and packing cartons each carry an item code the storekeeper agreed with us last week. He walks the racks with a tablet, counting by bin, and the screen shows what the system expects beside what he finds. A batch of adhesive is near expiry and he flags it; it will be issued first. Rolls of synthetic leather bought by the metre and issued by the piece are held in both units without a calculator.
