The master baker or the workshop foreman knows the quantities; the system does not. Recording bills of materials with expected yield means purchasing can be planned, a new supervisor can run the line, and actual consumption can be compared with standard.
Prices are often fixed by looking at competitors and adjusted when the auditor's figures arrive. Batch-wise costing that includes material, labour and overhead shows which products earn their place while there is still time to act.
Production stops because one ingredient or fitting ran out. Material requirement planning checks open orders against stock and pending purchases and raises the shortfall before the work order is released.
An example
The shift at a plywood unit near Cheruvannur starts with the work orders released the evening before. The supervisor scans the job card at the peeling line and the veneer output, by grade, is entered on a tablet as it comes off. Material planning had already flagged that the resin stock covered only two of the three orders, so the purchase went out on Monday and the drum arrived on Wednesday. At the press, the operator records the batch and the dryer's downtime. In the office the owner opens last week's batch costing: material, labour and power per sheet, by thickness. One size earns much less than he thought and he asks the sales desk to review its rate. A furniture workshop at Mandankavu calls about grade availability, and the clerk answers from stock rather than from the yard.
