Stock is where money quietly disappears. In Malappuram the forms it takes could hardly differ more: timber measured in cubic feet, furniture made to order, groceries with short shelf lives, medicines with expiry dates, phones and televisions by serial number in Tirur, tiles that vary by batch and shade. A Tirur electronics wholesaler that supplies shops along the coast from Tanur to Ponnani closes for its half-yearly count on a Sunday. Four staff walk the godown with phones, scanning the serial number on every television, mixer and phone box; the count sheet fills itself, rack by rack. By noon the reconciliation screen shows nine units the system holds that the racks do not, and the storekeeper traces seven of them to a transfer to the Kottakkal branch that was never posted. The remaining two go on the shortage list for Monday. The owner, at his son's house in Jeddah, opens the valuation report that evening and sees the godown worth what it should.
