A staff nurse raises an indent for sutures and disposables from the theatre sub-store on a Tuesday morning. The central store sees it at once, checks the batch with the nearest expiry, and issues that one. The transfer posts against the theatre's cost centre, so the month's consumption by department will need no reconstruction. Down the corridor, the pharmacy receives a delivery; the storekeeper scans each carton, records batch and expiry, and one line is held back because its shelf life is shorter than the policy allows. By evening the purchase officer has a reorder list built from actual consumption rather than a guess.
