A houseboat operator at Punnamada has three vessels due for their annual survey. The asset register lists each boat with its engine, generator, air conditioners and safety gear, and the reminder for the survey came weeks ago. On Monday the supervisor scans the tags on the first boat and logs the generator service done at the yard, with a photograph of the invoice. A life jacket count on the second boat comes up short, and last week's transfer to a third boat is found in the log. The certificate dates from the Kerala Maritime Board go in as they are issued, and the accountant runs depreciation for the quarter without asking anyone for a list.

A generator failure at night with guests on board means a refund and a bad review. Preventive maintenance schedules based on running hours, with reminders and a service history for each machine, catch most problems at the jetty and not on the lake.
