It is the last working day of the month at a handloom co-operative on the Kannur–Mattannur road. The secretary opens ERPNext and sees the yarn issued to each member weaver, the furnishing metres received back, and the wages due against them. A bulk order for a domestic buyer is half packed; the delivery note is already drafted from the sales order. The showroom in Kannur town billed through the same system, so its stock is already reduced. The accountant runs the GST report, checks two supplier invoices the portal does not match, and posts the wage journal. By evening the society has a trial balance the board can read, and the weavers have printed wage statements to check against their own slips.
Kannur has made things for a long time. Handloom furnishings leave the co-operative societies around Chirakkal, Kanhirode and Panoor, the beedi workers' co-operative has grown into food and garment lines, and plywood units line the Valapattanam river. Most are well run and badly recorded: the order book in one register, yarn stock in another, and the accounts reaching the auditor months after the work was done.
