A supermarket chain with a store in Maradu has a click-and-collect app tied to its ERPNext stock. On Saturday morning a customer in Thrippunithura orders the week's provisions from her phone; the app shows only what the Maradu store actually holds. The order appears on a picker's tablet in the store, is packed by eleven, and she gets a message when it is ready. She collects it on the way home, pays in the app, and the invoice, stock deduction and loyalty points are posted before she reaches the car park. The store manager sees Saturday's app orders beside counter sales on one screen.
Kochi has plenty of apps that were launched with a press note and forgotten within a year. The usual cause is not bad code. It is an app built without a clear job: nobody decided what the customer would do in it every week. In Ernakulam's crowded retail, property and finance markets, an app stays on a phone only when it saves a trip, a call or a wait.

An order placed on the app lands in an inbox, and someone types it into billing. Stock shown online is yesterday's. We build the integration first, so the app and the ERP share one record of customers, prices, stock and payments.

It depends on how often people will use it and what it must do. A tool used daily by field staff, or one needing the camera, GPS or offline access, justifies a mobile app. A portal customers visit monthly is usually better as a responsive web application.
