RFID is not for every business in Idukki, and a homestay or a small shop does not need it. It earns its place where stock or equipment is valuable, moves often and is hard to count by hand. Graded cardamom is worth a great deal per sack, yet most godowns count it by stack estimates and trust. Tagged sacks are read in bulk, lot by lot, and the count is compared with the books the same hour. Differences show up while they can still be explained.
When several growers' or several grades' lots share one floor, a misplaced sack goes out against the wrong sale. A tag carries the lot, grade and owner; a reader at the dispatch door warns if a sack outside the order is being loaded.
Maintenance stores issue costly instruments, tools and spares to crews working across dam sites and tunnels. Tagging them and logging issue and return gives a custody record, so a missing item is traced to a person and date.
