Two kinds of design problem turn up in Kozhikode. The first belongs to the IT companies at Cyberpark: a product that works but feels clumsy beside international competitors, because engineers designed the screens between sprints. The second belongs to traditional businesses going digital: an ordering app or billing screen used by traders on Nut Street or S.M. Street who have never been asked what they find confusing.

A designer sits on a stool at a trader's shop on Nut Street with a phone and a clickable prototype. The trader's clerk, hands dusty from weighing arecanut, tries to repeat last week's order to a Kozhikode wholesaler. He hunts for the button, finds it on the third screen and says nothing; the designer notes the pause. The trader himself reads Malayalam faster than English and skips a label he cannot parse. By afternoon the prototype has been rearranged in a café in Vadakara town: repeat order on the first screen, outstanding balance in large type, the label rewritten by the clerk. Back in Kochi the change costs an afternoon. Found after launch it would have cost a release.
Design research is the part we insist on doing face to face.
