It is the first of the month at a jeweller's outlet in Guruvayur, the day scheme instalments fall due. A year ago the counter would be lined with members wanting nothing but a receipt. Today the showroom is quiet enough that the salesman is serving a wedding party from Malappuram. Across the district, members are opening the scheme app: a nurse on night duty pays from the hospital canteen, a son in Muscat pays his mother's instalment and sends her the receipt, a retired postmaster in Kunnamkulam checks his balance and the maturity date. Each payment lands in the showroom's ERPNext, so the balance the app shows and the balance the counter sees are the same figure. In the afternoon a member walks in to pay in cash as she always has; the receipt goes to her passbook and to her phone, and nobody has re-entered anything.
Much of Thrissur's business is repeat business. A family pays into a jewellery savings scheme month after month, returns to the same ayurveda centre each monsoon, books the same lodge in Guruvayur for every family wedding, and holds accounts with a finance company its parents used. These relationships still run on printed cards, counter visits and phone calls, even though the customer on the other side has been paying every other bill from a phone for years.
